Everything you need to know about lubricant

We often think that lubricant is for others, that we don't need it, that it's useless... On the contrary, adding lubricant is a good habit to better ride the wave of pleasure!

What is lubricant used for?

Using lubricant facilitates penetration, reduces friction and prevents irritation or discomfort. It can also make sex more enjoyable and contribute to a more intimate and relaxed experience. There are different types of lubricants on the market, such as water-based, silicone-based, and oil-based, each of which has its advantages and disadvantages. It is important to be careful to choose a lubricant that is compatible with condoms and sex toys.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of a water-based lubricant?

Benefits :

  • Compatibility: Water-based lubricants are compatible with most latex condoms and sex toys, making them versatile.

  • Easy to clean: They are easy to wash and generally do not leave residue on skin or sheets. They are also non-staining.

  • Light, natural texture: Water-based lubricants often have a light, natural texture that mimics the body's natural lubrication.

  • Sex Toy Safe: As they are compatible with most materials, they are safe to use with a variety of sex toys.

  • Odorless and tasteless: Most water-based lubricants are odorless and tasteless, which may be preferable for those who are sensitive to odors or flavors.

Disadvantages:

  • Shorter shelf life: Water-based lubricants tend to be absorbed into the skin more quickly than other types of lubricants, which may require frequent reapplication.

  • Dries Faster: They may dry faster than silicone-based lubricants, which may require reapplication during prolonged sex.

  • Not suitable for water: Water-based lubricants are not ideal for use underwater, as they tend to wash off more easily.

  • Not suitable for all activities: Some water-based lubricants may not be thick enough for certain activities, such as anal intercourse or other sexual play that requires heavier lubrication.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of silicone-based lubricant?

Benefits :

  • Long-lasting: Silicone-based lubricants tend to last longer than water-based ones because they aren't absorbed into the skin as quickly. This means less need for reapplication during sexual activity.

  • Silky Texture: Silicone-based lubricants typically offer a smooth, silky texture, which can improve sensation during sex.

  • Water Resistance: Silicone-based lubricants are not water-soluble, making them ideal for sexual activities in water, such as showering or bathing.

  • Suitable for massages: Due to their slippery and long-lasting texture, silicone lubricants can also be used for sensual massages.

Disadvantages:

  • Incompatibility with some toys and condoms: Silicone-based lubricants can damage some silicone sex toys and are generally not recommended with latex condoms. However, there are silicone-based lubricants specially formulated to be compatible with latex condoms.

  • Potential to Stain Fabrics: Due to their composition, silicone lubricants can stain certain fabrics, which can be a disadvantage if you are using specific linens or clothing.

  • Higher price: Silicone-based lubricants often have a higher cost than water-based ones.

  • Harder to clean: They can be harder to clean than water-based lubricants because they don't dissolve easily in water.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of an oil-based lubricant?

Benefits :

  • Long life: Oil-based lubricants tend to last longer than other types of lubricants. They do not dry as quickly, providing extended lubrication.

  • Thick Texture: Some users prefer the thicker texture of oil-based lubricants because it can provide a more slippery and smooth feeling.

  • Versatility: Oil-based lubricants can be used for a variety of sexual activities, including vaginal penetration, anal penetration, and other forms of sexual play.

Disadvantages:

  • Incompatibility with latex condoms: Oil-based lubricants are generally not compatible with latex condoms because they can weaken them and increase the risk of breakage. If you're using condoms, it's best to opt for water- or silicone-based lubricants.

  • Difficulty to clean: Oil-based lubricants can be more difficult to clean than water-based lubricants. They can leave a greasy feeling on the skin and require stronger soap to completely remove.

  • May cause stains: Due to their oily nature, these lubricants may stain sheets and clothing. It is therefore important to be careful when using them.

  • Potential for irritation: Some individuals may be sensitive to oil-based lubricants and develop irritation. It is recommended to do a skin test before extended use.

How do you know if lubricant is expired?

First of all, check its expiration date, if it has passed, it is better not to use the lubricant and throw it away.
If the expiration date has not passed but it has been open for a while, see if the appearance is still the same. Check its smell, consistency, color, etc. An expired lubricant may have a rancid smell and an unusual consistency.
Finally, if the lubricant causes a strange sensation on the skin like tingling, or irritation, this is a sign that it is expired or that you are allergic to one of the components.

What can replace lubricant?

To avoid running out of fuel (we'll emphasize this great play on words) in the middle of sex, here are some natural alternatives to lubricant and also those to avoid!

The best alternatives

Coconut oil can be a substitute for lubricant but be careful all the same, here are some recommendations.
It is not compatible with sex toys and latex condoms. Indeed, coconut oil can degrade latex and therefore cancel all the reasons why you use a condom (prevention against STIs, STDs and contraception).
If you are prone to infections such as yeast infections, the use of coconut oil is not recommended. Indeed, coconut oil is antibacterial and antifungal, so it can disrupt the pH of your vagina and therefore cause an infection.
If you use coconut oil as an alternative to lubricant, make sure it is virgin , unrefined coconut oil ! Refined coconut oil with additives can leave you with drier skin than before and can irritate you.

Aloe vera is the best possible natural alternative! Its texture is similar to that of lubricant and it is compatible with all types of condoms. Invest in pure aloe vera gel!

Alternatives to avoid

Saliva is not a good alternative even if it is the easiest to obtain. Indeed, saliva has no lubricating power, it will in no way facilitate your sexual relations on the contrary... Its texture could dry out your mucous membranes more than anything else. Additionally, using saliva as a lubricant could increase the risk of STD transmission.

Vaseline is undoubtedly the worst alternative available. Certainly, it strongly resembles lubricant given its texture, but vaseline contains petroleum which can cause very serious infections!
If you have already been advised to use it as a lubricant, forget about this alternative immediately!

Anything related to cosmetic care, such as creams, gels, moisturizers should be avoided. Indeed, they contain a lot of irritating active ingredients such as perfume or silicone and this can cause swelling and irritation.

Lube

But who is Lube?
Lube is our (new) water-based and 100% natural lubricant! It has a key ingredient, hyaluronic acid, known for its highly hydrating active ingredient. Hyaluronic acid can contain up to 1000 times its weight in water, also known for its healing and restorative action, this lubricant will bring you a lot of comfort during your intercourse. Its non-greasy texture does not stain or run. Without perfume or synthetic flavors. And of course, compatible with sex toys and condoms. 😉
