How do you know if lubricant is expired?

First of all, check its expiration date, if it has passed, it is better not to use the lubricant and throw it away.
If the expiration date has not passed but it has been open for a while, see if the appearance is still the same. Check its smell, consistency, color, etc. An expired lubricant may have a rancid smell and an unusual consistency.
Finally, if the lubricant causes a strange sensation on the skin like tingling, or irritation, this is a sign that it is expired or that you are allergic to one of the components.

What can replace lubricant?

To avoid running out of fuel (we'll emphasize this great play on words) in the middle of sex, here are some natural alternatives to lubricant and also those to avoid!

The best alternatives

Coconut oil can be a substitute for lubricant but be careful all the same, here are some recommendations.
It is not compatible with sex toys and latex condoms. Indeed, coconut oil can degrade latex and therefore cancel all the reasons why you use a condom (prevention against STIs, STDs and contraception).
If you are prone to infections such as yeast infections, the use of coconut oil is not recommended. Indeed, coconut oil is antibacterial and antifungal, so it can disrupt the pH of your vagina and therefore cause an infection.
If you use coconut oil as an alternative to lubricant, make sure it is virgin , unrefined coconut oil ! Refined coconut oil with additives can leave you with drier skin than before and can irritate you.

Aloe vera is the best possible natural alternative! Its texture is similar to that of lubricant and it is compatible with all types of condoms. Invest in pure aloe vera gel!

Alternatives to avoid

Saliva is not a good alternative even if it is the easiest to obtain. Indeed, saliva has no lubricating power, it will in no way facilitate your sexual relations on the contrary... Its texture could dry out your mucous membranes more than anything else. Additionally, using saliva as a lubricant could increase the risk of STD transmission.

Vaseline is undoubtedly the worst alternative available. Certainly, it strongly resembles lubricant given its texture, but vaseline contains petroleum which can cause very serious infections!
If you have already been advised to use it as a lubricant, forget about this alternative immediately!

Anything related to cosmetic care, such as creams, gels, moisturizers should be avoided. Indeed, they contain a lot of irritating active ingredients such as perfume or silicone and this can cause swelling and irritation.
